Golding & Co. printing press advertising
We do not have very many resources for detailed study of Golding’s early presses, but, a great deal can be learned just by looking at images. Golding was constantly changing and improving the entire line and many of these changes can be picked up by careful observation of Golding ads published in a variety of sources. One word of warning. Be aware that the cuts used to illustrate the presses in these ads were not always current. An ad in a catalog from 1876 may be a press image from an earlier date and was just used to depict in general what the press looked like. The pages are for individual years the ads were published. I name the ads based on the year and name of the source they were collected from. As this collection of images grows, we should have a better picture of the press features and when they appeared or disappeared from the line. If you have an early image of an ad showing a Golding Pearl or Diamond printing press not depicted please consider emailing me a copy for inclusion in this effort. You can click on “contact” in the footer at the bottom of any page. Many of the images I show are available because of the generosity of Steve O Saxe who has made his wonderful collection of Golding ephemera available to the public. I am uploading the images as large as practical to allow the best viewing.
1874 Ads
You’ll notice in the ad above the press is listed as 7″ x 10″. I believe this was the same 6 x 9 press we know today, but, now measure by inside chase dimensions rather than type bed size.
